Delhi's calendar decides how easy this is. August averages about 10 rainy days, so a thick rug needs more help. October is the easy month, with under one rainy day on average and maximum temperatures around 33 degrees. January averages 21.6 foggy days and much cooler air, so choose a sunny stretch.

If a musty smell appears after a day or two, the backing may have stayed damp. Raise the rug on stools so that air reaches the underside, and keep the fans on it. The Institute says mould grows on the dirt on a carpet and not on the carpet itself, so a clean carpet that dries properly starts well ahead.

Vacuuming is the habit that decides how long the result lasts. The Carpet and Rug Institute suggests daily vacuuming in high traffic or pet areas, twice a week in medium traffic areas and weekly in light traffic ones. It says this removes the soil that wears out carpet fibre. With Delhi's dust, a carpet near a road-facing window or a balcony door belongs in the busier group.

Stop dirt before it reaches the rug. The Institute advises mats outside and inside the door, and taking shoes off indoors, which helps most in a builder floor or DDA flat where the carpet starts close to the entrance. Rug maker Nourison also advises against beater-bar vacuums on wool and similar rugs, because they can pull or snag the yarn.

The Institute's general advice is a professional deep clean every 12 to 18 months. Book sooner if the carpet looks grey in the walkways, smells musty or has had a spill you could not fully blot. Homes with pets, small children or a lot of road dust usually get there first.
